From a practitioner's perspective, is there a way to practice the element of surprise to enhance the presentation?

When you are giving a public recital, you have five techniques to make the expression more effective.
1) Volume variation
2) Speed variation
3) Gaps between phrases
4) Intelligent use of decorative elements
5) Unexpected phraseology

In a public recital the performer attempts to partially, if not fully, impress the listeners with his/her musical prowess. Playing for ‘self’ is a different phenomenon.
