I would like to respond to the issue restricting my observations to the situation in our gharana. I remember what Khansaheb said when I was playing a dhun of Ravishankarji. He said, “jo pasand aye wo le lo per us cheeze ko apne rang me rang do”. As you are referring to audiences, it is assumed that the musician is a concert level performer. It is not necessary to cater to every demand of the audience if you have to compromise your taleem. One can always find ways and means to satisfy the audience with speed/intelligent interplay with tabla etc. Thus gharanas have a very valuable role to play.

What’s the role of gharana in modern times especially when an artiste is exposed so much to the extreme mix of all kinds of music; how can one keep the track of one’s own gharanedar taleem when the audience’s demand is different or more extrovert?
