Pranam Guru Ji, It will be great if you could please enlighten us little more on Razakhani Gat. I initially learnt that Reza Khani gat has the following fixed bol pattern and starts from 7th Matra of Teen Taal. One of the specimen of such gat is the Patdeep composition of Ustad Enayet Khan. (I learnt this from you and Kashi Babu). Ustad Mustak Ali Khan has recorded several such bandishes (one I can remember on Raag Adana). Rest of the drut compositions do not follow the mentioned bol pattern, hence I was under impression that those are just Drut gat, not Reza Khani. Also I understood that all Drut Gats are not Reza Khani, but all Reza Khani gats are drut gats.(because all drut gats don't follow the same bol pattern). Many chota khayal influenced bandishes starting from 12th Matra / instrumental gats starting from sam / 9th beat can be considered as juust Drut Gats, not rezakhani for not following he particular bol pattern. Also it is said that the drut gats which were initially derived from bandish ki thumri are Reza Khani gats. Then we have reza khani gats on ragas like Bihag, Puria Kalyan, Ahir bhairav - which are actually not Thumri ang ragas. I have always maintained that Masitkhani Gats have fixed bols, and are played
in Vilambit Laya. But in recent times there are several new compositions in
vilambit lays with varying bols. Correctly these cannot be called pure
Masitkhani Gats.
On the other hand it is noted that all Razakhani Gats do not have a fixed bol
pattern. In some compositions the gats instead of starting from 7 th. Matra,
starts from 13 th. matra with the same bols. But there are several gats based
on different bol patterns. But they are all still called Razakhani gats. In my
opinion Razakhani Gats were evolved on the basis of Bandish ki Thumris.
This concept however is now pushed into the back ground and gats are
considered as Vilambit or Drut along with the name of the Taal it is based on.
The description with old nomenclature is left for elderly sitar players !!!
