Q62

Pranam Guru ji.. in one of the initial baithak sessions (in 2014) u explained the differences between different semiclassical forms of ICM. like thumri, dadra, chaity, kajri, hori, jhula, barsati, tappa, tap khayal etc. In case we have any written note / record of the session - it will be of great help.

Pranam Ram, I send a delayed response to your question raised on 9th of Aug.
I felt that generally speaking there could be three musical streams in light classical
forms which are as follows
1) Thumri, Dadra, Ghazal, Quawali
2) Chaity, Kajri, Savan, Jhula etc. (season based)
3) Bhajan, Geet, Abhang etc. (devotional forms)
As I have not studied items covering point no. 2 & 3 of the above, I have following
observations to make for point no. 1.
As we all know music comprises of three major ingredients viz. Sahitya, Swar and
Laya / Taal. If we apply each one of these ingredients to the referred to forms, we
would get the following:

Sahitya Swar Laya / Taal
Thumri Mildly relevant Very important Very slow tempo (Deepchandi etc.)
Dadra More relevant than in Thumri. According to some, permits some romantic themes. Almost as important as in Thumri Madhya Laya / Drut Laya (Dadra, Kaherva)
Ghazal Very important Much less important as melodic structure is repetitious.
Quawali Important Much less important as melodic structure is repetitious. Accentuated with clapping in addition to faster rhythm.
