Q50

Namaste Guruji. Further to my earlier Q abt the pace of alap in our gharana, is there some parameter to decide the speed in which one shd start the vilambit gat, especially after playing jod, ulta jhala and some UVK style tans? I understand that earlier in Enayet Khan's time the pace was a bit faster. Has the gayaki ang influenced the pace of V gat to be slower? Thanks and regards

Off hand I can think of two reasons.
1) great improvement in quality of sitar, enabling greater resonance and ability to
sustain greater gaps between phrases and therefore slower tempo.
2) Increasing influence of khyal which reduced execution of Vilambit Khayal in slower
tempo influencing playing of Vilambit Gat on sitar similarly.
Further, there are no set rules relating to the speed at which Vilambit Gat should be
played. It would, in my opinion, governed by the speed at which a player is able to
execute cho- gun taans
